Before now, we weren’t sure which it was. Then came Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, lawyer, OAP and Nigerian Twitter overlord to resolve this niggling, gnawing uncertainty for good. So then, excepting @jgoodlucktweets, who are all these people?

At least we now know who the real McCoy is from all the other Fedora-sporting posers. On to the next puzzle — why has the real President Goodluck Jonathan not tweeted since 2011? We’re not sure, but he probably doesn’t give a damn. At least not until 2015 election season.


#StanbicDelight: Radio Meets Web In Stanbic IBTC’s Social Media Campaign

Social Media Week Lagos Partners With Volkswagen, Announces 2014 Venues

Social Media Week Lagos (SMW Lagos), produced by Dragon Africa and AFRIKA21, is a week long event that is part of the Social Media Week global platform and takes place in Lagos February 17 – 21, 2014. After a hugely successful inaugural year that hosted 110 events, had over 8,000 registrations and garnered over 31 million online impressions, SMW Lagos looks to build a bigger, bolder and better connected conference.


Through a partnership with Volkswagen, the SMW Lagos headquarters will be hosted at the 850 sqm (9,000 sq ft) Volkswagen Centre in Victoria Island, Lagos. This unique venue will enable SMW Lagos to accommodate large groups in a theatre style set up, as well as feature dynamic installations to enhance attendees experiences.


New for 2014 is SMW Lagos #AfterHours. Lagos is known around the world for it’s nightlife. As a supplement to daytime programming SMW Lagos will curate a week of memorable and shareable post conference evening events. The SMW Lagos #AfterHours Hub at Club Pravada will host a variety of night time activities and programming.

Better Connected.

For 2014, a key goal for SMW Lagos is to engage citizens across Lagos by bringing programming to different communities. With this in mind SMW Lagos introduces #SMWSatellite venues, smaller venues throughout Lagos that will host engaging programming in a more intimate setting. The newly opened Enterprise Creative HotHouse, a co-working space for creative and digital entrepreneurs in Ikeja, will serve as 1 of several #SMWsatellite venues. HotHouse will host a variety SMW Lagos crowd sourced programming including master classes and workshops.

In addition, Terra Kulture located in VIctoria Island, Lagos returns for 2014 as out Music, Arts, Culture & Entertainment Hub (#smwMACE). SMW Lagos hubs/venues will host a variety of dynamic programming produced by local and international event partners.

WizKid Takes To Social Media To Fulfil MTN Ambassadorial Duty

The Jaiye Jaiye star, Wizkid took to social media to fulfil his duties as a brand ambassador to largest telecom company in Nigeria – MTN. Wizkid does have one of the biggest social media foot print on the African continent and covers popular platforms including: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and recently Google+ and Blogger.

Having been following his activities on these platforms, one can say he does a good job in managing his online presence, engaging with fans especially on Twitter and Instagram – and this is no surprise as those are the easiest to use with such a mobile lifestyle.

Breaking From The Norm

Brand ambassadors, especially musicians, are often known to perform at promotional shows and make appearances at launch events, but Wizkid took to Twitter with hashtags including #MTNNigeria, #MTNLoudInNaija to give free airtime to his followers. No doubt that caused a lot of excitement and some of the hashtags trended.

Taking it up a notch, the artist posted on his Google+ page that he would be doing same on Instagram but guess he did not think that one through as he headed back to twitter. This makes sense as he would have to make photos of video capturing the airtime PINs before sharing on Instagram, whereas he just enters them as text on twitter. Interesting to note that Facebook was left out of the action, even with the artist’s page holding more than 800,000 fans.

Happy Wizkid Fan, Happy MTN Fan

Another interesting outcome is  brands traditionally pay a lot of money to celebrity ambassadors who in return build following for the brand, but using social media also sees Wizkid grow his own following, as everybody wants free airtime and will not mind clicking the follow button on his Twitter and Instagram page. Perhaps MTN did not even get a single subscriber on any of their social network, but some WizKid followers not on the MTN network may have just gone out to get new sim cards so as to enjoy the freebies.

Appreciation kept streaming in to signify a high level of engagement, and even a particular tweeter sent a screen grab after winning N23,000 worth of airtime.

No Such Thing As A Free Meal

As to what people will do with the free airtime they got, Wizkid recommended getting Caller Tunes including Jaiye Jaiye, The Matter, and Caro, all distributed by none other than MTN, while the rest definitely go to the usual culprit: voice calls, SMS, and data. Talk about circular cash-flow.

2Go Set To Go Global – COO Marc Herson At #NokiaWorld

2go has become leading social networking app in Africa, especially Nigeria with about 9 Million active users which is currently more than Facebook and Twitter users.  I  ran into Marc Herson,  COO of 2go at Nokia World here in Abu Dhabi and we discussed a little of 2go’s operations and development in Africa particularly Nigeria.

Marc explained that 2go is now ready to go global by being available in India and then the rest of the world.  Having the app on the Nokia and Windows Phone platform is definitely a step in the right direction and one can only watch the adoption rate go up the charts.

On Religion and Flirt Trends

I asked Marc of the most used chat rooms in Nigeria and I wasn’t surprised when he told me Flirt and Religion (Christianity and Islam)  are the most used chat room. South Africa is behind Nigeria as regards users on 2go with  1.5 million users while Kenya comes in in third place 100,000+ users.

Marc was patient enough to take me through the 2Go Android app which has more than 500,000 downloads with a lot of chat rooms.

Marc explained that 2go never did any major advert  until recently with the partnership with Nokia. Ah, it now makes sense why he is here at Nokia World, Abu Dhabi.

Rumours has it that Nokia will announce their first Phablet at the Nokia World event at Abu Dhabi with a lot of new Lumia series. Probably we’d also get to hear the official announcement of  the buy-out by Microsoft.

#SMWLagos | Lagos City Gets Ready For Social Media Week 2014

Social Media Week Lagos (SMW Lagos) co-produced by Dragon Africa and AFRIKA21 returns for a second year to Lagos February 17 – 21, 2014. In 2013 SMW Lagos drew over 8,000 attendee registrations, garnered 19,148 twitter mentions and amassed over 31 million online impressions.

SMW Lagos is part of the larger Social Media Week global conference, now in it’s 6th year and attended by over 66,000 people annually.  Social Media Week’s mission is to help people and organizations connect through collaboration and the sharing of ideas and information.  The format of the week-long conference is a mixture of keynotes, panels, workshops, networking events and mixers, with the majority of the events being free and open to the public.

Facebook Page Admins, There Is An Update For You

Facebook recently prompted me to update a page I manage. This happened after I read about Facebook updating page insights. This update would be delightful for Facebook page managers and marketers.

For page admins, the update has a more comprehensible design with a clean dashboard that makes it easy to get useful data about your page. With the update, admins can see stats about how fans are interacting with their page during the week. Introducing an ‘engagement’ feature, admins can now break down data into post clicks, likes, shares, comments, ad even negative feedback. You can also filter down to individual posts, know the reach of each post and see how fans interact with the page.

Old insight

What excites me about the Facebook page insights update is the post section on the dashboard. There, you have insights into when fans are online. You can also know what content your fans interact with most and the time they are most active on your page. With these stats, you can concentrate on developing relevant content for your audience and posting the content when your audience would be available to consume it.
