It’s now that time of the year when we take a look at the videos, channels, and moments that shaped our year. As unpredictable as each year seems to be, it’s clear that trending videos are getting bigger, and the global community responsible for them is driving pop culture unlike ever before.

A look at Nigerian favorite music videos in 2013, reveals that Naija music has indeed found a place in our hearts and on our dance floors. And you made more “Harlem Shake” videos than there are people in Manhattan (1.7 million if you’re counting).

To celebrate all these moments, over 60 top creators on YouTube got together and made this little video

Behind every great video is a great channel, and the channels behind this year’s top videos have more than 23 million subscribers around the world. Team Collaboration App, Cubicle Comes To Google Chrome

Cubicle, a team collaboration app that allows businesses, companies and teams work together from any location using their preferred devices, has gone one step further to integrate itself into the Google Chrome, so users get notification from team members right on the web browser.

With Cubicle businesses do not have to work about having all their staff in a particular geographical area. They can even go ahead and employ staff across different time zones. In other words, think of Cubicle as a virtual office in the cloud for businesses.

Cubicle does this by building and providing tools that businesses need e.g a threaded inbox, where all conversations can go on; a project management tool, where businesses can create projects and assign them to team members; a whiteboard, similar to a real whiteboard in an office, where team members can post and share ideas; a calendar, to keep track of appointments and events; and a couple of more features.

Having the Google Chrome version of the app is move to keep users always active as there is no need to be have the app as an active screen. Users can now go about their other activities on the web and get cubicle notifications. You can easily search for and install the Chrome app by searching the web store.

Google Introduces Mobile Device Management Portal For Android Users

Mobile Device Management (MDM) is the ability to secure, monitor, manage and support mobile devices – typically involving remote distribution of applications, data and configuration settings for all types of mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets and notebook computers.

By the end of August 2013, Google Inc. is planning to launch a portal where we all can track and locate our Android devices. With Android devices gaining alarming prominence in Nigerian market, this is going to be of immense benefit to us. You will not only be able to locate it when lost once logged in to the portal, you can also call it or remotely wipe off your Android phone to keep your files secured.

All that is required to logged on to the portal is a username, password and internet connection. With the portal, you can also change your phone password in case you forget it at home and you fear it would fall into the wrong hands (like a nosy wife or curious siblings) before you get back home.

The portal is going to be available for all devices running Android 2.2 and above via Google Play Services. I’ll keep you posted once it’s available on Google Play.

4 Apps To Help You Get Over The Death Of The Google Reader

Editor’s Note: Ben Easton is an eBook writer. He frequently shares his tips for writing on blogs for professional writers.

Google Reader is now gone, just in case you thought it was an April fool stunt. Following a decision earlier this year, the internet giant decided to pull the plug on its RSS reader.

Truth is the Reader was never a particularly profitable venture for Google, and as more and more people opt to get their news from live sources such as Facebook and Twitter, the Reader saw its fortunes further diminish. While Reader was certainly declining in popularity over the years, it still enjoyed a loyal following. Those followers, understandably, are looking for alternatives, and luckily there are many such alternatives on offer today.

While it is now too late to transfer your RSS subscriptions from Reader, we will look at some of the other great RSS readers out there that will help you rebuild your subscriptions.

feedly

Feedly

Now that Google Reader is gone, Feedly has taken the position as the most popular RSS reader on the market today. It’s no wonder, either, as Feedly offers users everything they would expect from an RSS feed. The design is simple and looks great, and it can be configured to even resemble Google Reader or a newspaper format. Because it is the most popular RSS reader out there, it is also guaranteed to work with the most number of sites, making it particularly useful. Feedly also works great with Apple and Android devices, making it perfect for those who want their news on the go.

The Old Reader

For those who just cannot let go of Google Reader, The Old Reader is ideal. This web-based application is designed to resemble the old Google Reader from way back. It focuses on the social connectedness that Google’s Reader used to offer, and will make an excellent transition for those who have only previous experience with Google’s program. As it is web-based, it will require a PC or laptop, meaning a good internet connection, which can be found through clear internet coverage, is ideal.

pulse

Pulse

On the other hand, if you want to take Reader’s demise as an opportunity to embrace something completely different, then Pulse is for you. Unlike other RSS readers, Pulse doesn’t attempt to mimic Google Reader or other standard RSS layouts. Rather, you receive your news through tiles of visual images, and the stories that Pulse thinks you will be most interested in are pushed to the top. Its unique and visual layout makes it an attractive alternative for those who are looking to shake things up a bit.

digg

Digg Reader

Digg’s hotly anticipated Reader was put on rush development following the announcement of Google Reader’s shutdown. This reader is the newest on the market and resembles a more polished version of the Google Reader. It comes with some additional features, however, such as Instapaper sharing and Digg integration. It is also perfect for following news items that are popular at the moment and thus keeping up with what your friends are reading.

Google Reader was an important development in the history of RSS, but now that it’s gone loyal Reader users have no choice but to look for alternatives. Thankfully, however, the world of RSS is bigger than Google and the alternatives on offer all look great and provide what Google Reader provided and more. Any of the above RSS readers are guaranteed to fill that hole left behind by Google Reader’s exit.

NextSpeel Brings You Nigerian TV Series Online For Free

Local content in Nigeria  is getting increasing value with efforts from players like  iROKO Partners, and more recently the Google SYNC initiative. Perhaps a reason why NextSpeel is an interesting product, having just launched to the public. Possibly for the first time in an organised manner in Africa, Soap Operas and TV series (not movies) can now be accessed online.

NextSpeel plans to be create a  pan-African market, with Nigeria as a pilot country, and immediate plans to expand into other African countries starting with West Africa. Full episodes of soap operas that made waves on traditional TV and cable and other productions would be available on demand with more recent episodes added occasionally.

With the platform currently hosting a number of series, including  House Apart, Extended Family, My Mum and I and Soul Sistas, the startup’s immediate plan is to find traction – grow user base, as well as content base, and that may not be far off with the freemium model adopted, but again time will tell.

Do stay tuned for updates about NextSpeel and the team behind it.

In almost every street corner is a beggar, a motherless baby, an intellectually challenged child, a disease-ravaged man or woman and a destitute with little hope of getting help or being saved.

Several people have been motivated by the pain of others to start charitable organizations to help some of these people. HelpACause is a platform which allows Nigerians to help and donate to a specific cause – help a child get his much-needed Kidney-Transplant or help a motherless babies’ home stay open. No amount is too small. HelpACause will empower every well-meaning Nigerian to contribute and help others. Each donation is considered sacred and will be for verified causes only. Transparently.

This CodeParty is a community-driven venture to bring together analysts, architects, developers and designers for an all-nighter with a focus on building this platform. Your time is a valuable contribution, necessary to make this much-needed platform a reality.

There are limited spaces on the code teams, so head over here to reserve your tickets. It’s a code party so there’s going to be plenty to eat and drink.
