You can now hide “last seen” status on WhatsApp for Android

This is no unofficial hack. According to sources, WhatsApp’s latest update for Android now gives you options on who has access to your “last seen” status – anyone with your number, only your contacts, or no one at all. This new privacy feature also extends to your profile photo and status message (just go to menu -> settings -> account -> privacy).

Other changes in this update include the ability to pay for a friend’s WhatsApp subscription  and, you’ll be glad to find that, the mute function for groups finally works.

There’s no given time frame for when this update will be live on the Google  Play Store but the apk is already available for download directly from WhatsApp.

Facebook to acquire Whatsapp in a deal worth $19 billion

Despite having dismissed earlier rumours (that have now turned out to be true), WhatsApp is finally selling off to Facebook.

The deal is worth $12 billion in Facebook shares and $4 billion in cash. There’s also an additional $3 billion in restricted stock to WhatsApp founders and employees.

Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, made the announcement yesterday, explaining in detail the motivation behind the deal. And in case you’re wondering what becomes of your favourite messaging platform, Jan Koum, WhatsApp Co-founder, assures us nothing will change:

WhatsApp will remain autonomous and operate independently. You can continue to enjoy the service for a nominal fee. You can continue to use WhatsApp no matter where in the world you are, or what smartphone you’re using. And you can still count on absolutely no ads interrupting your communication.

Okay Jan, we’re getting you. Just like you told us you wouldn’t sell.

Guess who’s top-earning on the Google Play Store? Pastor Chris is

If you had to guess which app attracts the highest in-app purchases on the Google Play store, you’d probably give it to the usual suspects; Candy Crush, FIFA 14, Angry Birds, Football Manager…. However, the current top grossing app on the Google Play store in Nigeria is popular televangelist, Pastor Chris’s Digital Library app.

Pastor Chris Digital Library, launched in July of 2013,  is a platform for users  to purchase audio and video messages by Pastor Chris. Prices for content range from around $2 to $9. Seeing as payments are processed by Google Wallet, it’s not exactly a surprise that it’s the top grossing app.  If you already pay for stuff on the Google Play store, you’re always just one click away from purchasing audio and video messages from Pastor Chris’s collection. You kinda have to wonder, why haven’t the likes of Spinlet tried out this payment model? It’s easy and convenient for the user and recurring payments are a breeze to implement.

Forget That Puny USB Charger, Huawei’s Latest Phablet Will Power Your Other Devices

Giant

Announced at the ongoing International Consumer Electronics Show, Chinese tech challenger Huawei’s latest monster, the Ascend Mate 2, sports a non-removable 4,050mAh battery. In everyday speak, the device can hold three times the quantity of power an iPhone could ever hope to store, and Huawei estimates that one charge will take you through two days of unrestrained use. Against that very, well, powerful backdrop, it makes absolute sense that the 6.1-inch 4G/LTE phablet comes with a USB port for reverse charging: this thing is effectively a backup power pack for other devices. No, Samsung didn’t see this one coming.

See the Ascend Mate 2 charging an iPhone in a cheeky photo from Huawei’s CEO of consumer services, Richard Yu’s CES presentation below.

Is BRCK The Solution To Your Internet Connectivity Problem?

No network signal, no power. There’s power, but there’s no network signal. The network signal is strong, but your battery is “too low for radio use.” That’s the nature of getting online in Africa.

Enter: BRCK.

Engineered by Kenya-based non-profit tech startup Ushahidi, developers of the eponymous data crowdsourcing platform that wowed Africa a few years ago, BRCK — a solidly-built cloud-managed modem/router — may well be the solution to widespread Internet connectivity problems on the continent.

The rugged (oil/dirt/splash resistant) 510-gram box touted as a “backup generator for the Internet,”  will suck juice from Ethernet, Wi-Fi or 3G/4G mobile networks for a blissful eight hours (without a mad dash for a nearby power source), piping the good stuff to up to twenty connected devices (top that, Huawei). It also comes with USB ports so you can charge stuff off its huge 8,000 mAH battery, as well as an Arduino-compatible expansion controller that should interest would-be hack.., er, hobbyists.

No word yet on when the approximately ₦32,000 device will land on store shelves in Nigeria, but you can learn more about BRCK here and from Ushahidi co-founder Juliana Rotich’s TED Talk below.
