The Nokia X Device was announced recently as a foray by Nokia into the world of Android Devices. Nokia describes it as “Your Fastline to AndroidTM Apps”. The Nokia X device is a Nokia Phone that runs android Apps and also allows you to access popular apps from Nokia and Microsoft (MixRadio, HERE Maps, HERE Drive, Skype) and services as well. Software Developers also stand to gain a new audience for promoting their mobile apps because the platform provides a new market for their apps.
The Nokia X is one of the best phones I have seen so far at the price point that has been set for it. All other phones which run Android Apps that cost 20,000 Naira (think Samsung) usually don’t live up to minimum expected performance.
Always-on Dual SIM: The Always-on Dual SIM is a boon for those who have multiple lines and don’t want to buy several phones. The always-on feature allows them to be able to receive calls from both lines (but not at the same time)
Ability to run Android Apps: This is the No. 1 advantage because it gives users access to a vast range of Android apps
Multiple Apps Stores (some pre-loaded already), so you’re spoilt for choice.
Vibrant screen: The 4-inch screen
Easy to hold in the hand, sturdy design.
Even though the Nokia X Device tries to achieve a lot at its low price point, there are still some shortcomings that need to be improved.
Battery Life: Battery life isn’t so good especially when running apps that continually poll for data e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Skype. But under normal usage (calls, infrequent data usage), Battery life is good enough for most users.
Better sensor in Camera to compensate for low-light situations: The Nokia X device camera performs poorly in low light and an improvement is needed in future iterations of the device hardware / software.
More RAM: 512MB is too low. Although the Nokia X software does resource control very well, a little lag is still experienced if there are a lot of apps running in the background
What can be better
As new software updates are issued to these devices, more features will probably be added in the future. Some of the key features i would want would be
